COST OF EDUCATION
Public universities in Germany charge only a semester fee of €150 to €350 for administrative costs — this is not tuition. Some states charge international students €1,500 per semester. Private universities charge €10,000 to €20,000 per year. The total cost of a 2-year Masters in Germany at a public university including living expenses is approximately €18,000 to €25,000 — compared to $80,000 to $100,000 in the USA.
INTAKES AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Germany has two intakes — Winter Semester in October (main intake) and Summer Semester in April. The DAAD offers generous scholarships with monthly stipends of €850 to €1,200 plus health insurance and travel allowance. The Deutschlandstipendium provides €300 per month to high-achieving students.
EXAM REQUIREMENTS
For English-taught programs: IELTS 6.0 to 7.0 or TOEFL 80 to 100 · For German-taught programs: German language B2 or C1 certificate · GRE is generally not required · Indian students need an APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) certificate to verify academic qualifications. USWS will guide you through the APS process.
VISA PROCESS
Step 1 — Receive your university admission letter.
Step 2 — Open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with €11,208 to prove financial resources.
Step 3 — Apply for a German National Visa (Type D) at the German Embassy in India.
Step 4 — Submit documents including admission letter, blocked account proof, health insurance, language certificates and APS certificate.
Step 5 — Attend your visa appointment — waiting times can be 4 to 8 weeks so apply early.
