California State University—East Bay is a public institution that was founded in 1957. There are three California State University—East Bay campuses in the San Francisco Bay area, which are located in Hayward Hills, Concord, and Oakland. Students at Cal State East Bay, as it is known, can earn degrees in more than 50 areas of undergraduate study and nearly 40 fields of graduate study, including business, speech-language pathology, and public affairs. Outside the classroom, students at Cal State East Bay can participate in more than 100 organizations and more than 20 fraternities and sororities.

Student-athletes can play at the intramural level or try out for the Cal State East Bay Pioneers varsity sports teams, which are members of the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association and compete in about 15 sports. Off-campus, CSU East Bay students can travel to the theaters, shopping centers, museums, and restaurants of San Francisco in minutes, as well as to the Pacific Ocean in about an hour. Notable California State University—East Bay alumni include comedy writer J.R. Havlan, who has won numerous Emmy Awards for his work on The Daily Show.
